Wereth, Belgium — Coordinates Patch
Carry the exact place where history happened.
50°20'55.14"N, 6°13'55.37"E — these coordinates point to Wereth, a small village in eastern Belgium. On December 17, 1944, during the opening days of the Battle of the Bulge, eleven Black American soldiers of the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion were separated from their unit near this village. Hermann Langer, the town's mayor, took the men into his home and told his neighbors, "These men are our guests," giving them food, warm clothing, and shelter at great personal risk.
Today, a memorial stands in Wereth honoring both the eleven soldiers and the Langer family's act of courage — a reminder that humanity can hold its ground even in war's darkest hour.
